My latest mini-project has been a refresh of my kitchen seating area. This area of my kitchen has been a bit of a pet peeve for me since we first moved in. Its a decent space but it’s under utilised and the whole area has never looked as I had originally envisioned so I’ve been wanting to give it a refresh for a while now. Back in 2014, when we had just completed our self build, there wasn’t much left in the budget and we had a lot of empty space to fill. We invested in the things we needed the most, sofa, bed, dining table etc. and so the kitchen seating area was at the bottom of the list. Shortly after we moved in, Simon and I were in our local Next store when we happened upon an ex-display snuggle seat in the sale at a bargain price. It wasn’t the ideal colour but it was too good a bargain to pass up so we bought it on impulse, thinking that it might work in our living room.
After getting it home (thanks to my dad and his pickup) we put it in the living room but it didn’t really fit as we already had a big corner sofa so Simon moved it in the kitchen, where it stayed for the next 5 years. It never quite looked right but it filled a space and it was rather comfortable. This is what the space looked liked before:
Recently we’ve been been updating some of the rooms in the house, replacing the items that were scrabbled together when we first moved it. Earlier this year, we put in built-in wardrobes in our dressing room, replacing the £25 shop rail that we used when we first moved in. Though don’t get me wrong, I still love a bargain and so you’ll still find plenty of those around the house, like my £10 IKEA stool we use as a TV cabinet.
Here are some photo’s of my seating area refresh, I’m not done yet…I’m still looking for a couple of things to add to the area but you’ll get the idea.
I wanted to make the area into a calm and neutral space, in keeping with my own personal style. I’m hoping this will create a classic look that will be timeless, but that I can also update with seasonal and colour trends through accessories and soft furnishings. I think it’s going to be a great space for weekend coffees with Simon and cuddles with Rory.
